5 Ways to Manage Distractions for Increased Productivity

Are you supposed to be doing something else right now?

You’re probably in the midst of a complicated project and had planned to take just a minute to send a tweet or update your Facebook status. Then you saw the link to this article and figured that reading about how to manage distractions would be a good thing to know. Hot Chicken Wings in KFC basket, you’re distracted!

It’s okay. We all get distracted sometimes. The difference between you and all the other people who get distracted easily is that you won’t continue to be distracted. You’ll read the five tips below and leave a brief comment telling me which tip you plan on implementing as you go back to your work. Would that we all could be so focused!

But we aren’t. The best we can hope to do is manage our distractions so they don’t gnaw at our productivity. Here are five tips to help you harness the distraction beast and get more productivity out of your day:

1. Schedule Breaks

The moments you spend away from you work are just as much a part of your life as those spent toiling away. Treat them as such! Scheduling breaks, especially when you’re short on time and long on work, can make the difference between productive success and burnout.

Don’t wait until you’re frazzled – Schedule your breaks, no matter how brief they may be, as a way of “topping off” your energy reserves instead of a way to come back from an empty tank.
Stay on schedule – If you planned to take a 15-minute break at 12:00, you’d better be backing away from your desk by 12:01! The same goes for ending your breaks. Stay on time and you’ll find it easier to move in and out of your focused work mode without losing forward motion.
A break should be a restorative action – Chatting with a friend online about your project isn’t a break. It’s a distraction. The idea of a break isn’t to derail your train of thought but to pause for restoration and refueling.

2. Plan for Distractions

There will always be the call you must take, a fire alarm in your building, or an inexplicably suicidal pet. Interruptions happen. These simple steps will help you handle interruptions without losing too much forward motion:

Acknowledge the interruption – The best interruptions are the ones we see coming. The worst tend to open our door without knocking and spill coffee all over important papers. No matter the interruption, it’s not worth your time to get annoyed. Doing so will just make it that much harder to return to work once the interruption is over.
Bookmark your idea – In the moments after the phone rings for the first time or you’ve said “come in” to the person knocking on your office door, you have a chance to note exactly where you were heading with your project. Part of planning for interruptions is to have sticky notes or a favorite bit of software open in order to jot a quick note before the phone rings a 3rd time or your depressed cat jumps off the balcony.
Minimize your immediate involvement – Many interruptions require more than just an answer. Clients, partners, spouses, and friends typically want an action and not just a conversation. The trick to staying productive in spite of the interruption is to schedule your action for a later time. If your friend needs your feedback on a project, say you’ll be glad to give it in 20 minutes once you’ve wrapped up your own project. Follow through with quality and others will respect you for setting boundaries.

3. Regulate Inputs

It makes you feel more relevant and connected to be “plugged in” at every moment of the day. It’s fun to have an average email response time in the single digits. But at what cost? Forget about the memories and happy moments you miss out on because you’re staring at a screen or answering a call. What about all the ideas you never have because you just don’t take time to think?

Silence your Blackberry (iPhone) and put it out of sight.
Schedule phone calls so you have at least an hour of complete silence each day.
Limit the number of times you check your email each day and batch your replies when possible.
If you need to use Facebook or Twitter, do so as part of your scheduled breaks. There’s no need to let a bored shopkeeper from Siberia mess up your groove by sending you mean tweets!

4. Know Your Productive Zone

When do you get your best work done? Are you a genius in the morning but slow in the afternoon? Do you work best late at night when you’re alone? Most of us only have a few hours each day that we can honestly point to as being truly productive hours. Those hours are what I call a “productive zone.” (I do my best writing in the early afternoon once I’ve had a cup of strong tea.) It can take some time to figure out what works best, but once you do? Guard that time with a ferocity put to use. If you know yourself to be productive under specific circumstances and can communicate the importance of those circumstances to others, there’s a good chance your requests will fall on welcoming ears.

5. Increase Your Margins

One of the most annoying things about interruptions is that we almost never have time for them. In our rush to get projects done at the last minute and force ideas under pressure, we miss out on numerous fun conversations and inspirational moments. If you give yourself enough time to complete projects at a high quality and allow for a few interruptions and restorative actions (breaks) you won’t find interruptions as distracting. You’ll have scheduled them, after all.

A professional salesperson refuses to engage in the short-cycle of cold call/sell/move on. An urgent plea from the boss before the end of the quarter isn't enough reason to abandon your consistent approach.

That's because cold calls are painful and rarely lead to sales. The professional salesperson realizes that closing a sale and then moving on wastes an opportunity for both you and the person you're working with.

A flustered programmer who grabs the relevant library without understanding its context or the role of the libraries around it will be in the same urgent state in just another few days.

The politician who only shows up when it's time to raise money, probably won't.
We remember what you did when you didn't need us so urgently.

If you're going to make a career of it (and of course, if you want to excel, you will), that means taking the time to understand the texture of your field. It means investing, perhaps overinvesting, in relationships long before it's in your interest to do so.

When it comes down to decisions that matter, your town, every town, is far more likely to support the one who has moved in, put down roots and contributed than it is to rush to whatever bright shiny object shows up for a few days before moving on.

A gossip between a passenger and Software Engineer in Shatabdi Express!!

An interesting and a must read!

Vivek Pradhan was not a happy man.. Even the comfort of the air-conditioned compartment of the Shatabdi express could not cool his frayed nerves. He was the Project Manager and still not entitled to air travel. It was not the prestige he sought, he had tried to reason with the admin person, it was the savings in time. As PM, he had so many things to do!!

He opened his case and took out the laptop, determined to put the time to some good use.

'Are you from the software industry sir?' the man beside him was staring appreciatively at the laptop. Vivek glanced briefly and mumbled in affirmation, handling the laptop now with exaggerated care and importance as if it were an expensive car.

'You people have brought so much advancement to the country, Sir. Today everything is getting computerized.'

'Thanks,' smiled Vivek, turning around to give the man a look. He always found it difficult to resist appreciation. The man was young and stockily built like a sportsman..... He looked simple and strangely out of place in that little lap of luxury like a small town boy in a prep school. He probably was a railway sportsman making the most of his free traveling pass.

'You people always amaze me,' the man continued, 'You sit in an office and write something on a computer and it does so many big things outside.'

Vivek smiled deprecatingly. Naiveness demanded reasoning not anger. 'It is not as simple as that my friend. It is not just a question of writing a few lines. There is a lot of process that goes behind it.'

For a moment, he was tempted to explain the entire Software Development Lifecycle but restrained himself to a single statement.

'It is complex, very complex.'

'It has to be. No wonder you people are so highly paid,' came the reply.

This was not turning out as Vivek had thought. A hint of belligerence crept into his so far affable, persuasive tone.

'Everyone just sees the money. No one sees the amount of hard work we have to put in. Indians have such a narrow concept of hard work. Just because we sit in an air-conditioned office, does not mean our brows do not sweat. You exercise the muscle; we exercise the mind and believe me that is no less taxing.'

He could see, he had the man where he wanted, and it was time to drive home the point.

'Let me give you an example. Take this train. The entire railway reservation system is computerized. You can book a train ticket between any two stations from any of the hundreds of computerized booking centers across the country.

Thousands of transactions accessing a single database, at a time concurrently; data integrity, locking, data security. Do you understand the complexity in designing and coding such a system?'

The man was awestruck; quite like a child at a planetarium. This was something big and beyond his imagination.

'You design and code such things?'

'I used to,' Vivek paused for effect, 'but now I am the Project Manager.'

'Oh!' sighed the man, as if the storm had passed over, 'so your life is easy now.'

This was like the last straw for Vivek. He retorted, 'Oh come on, does life ever get easy as you go up the ladder. Responsibility only brings more work. Design and coding! That is the easier part. Now I do not do it, but I am responsible for it and believe me, that is far more stressful. My job is to get the work done in time and with the highest quality.

To tell you about the pressures, there is the customer at one end, always changing his requirements, the user at the other, wanting something else, and your boss, always expecting you to have finished it yesterday.'

Vivek paused in his diatribe, his belligerence fading with self-realization. What he had said, was not merely the outburst of a wronged man, it was the truth. And one need not get angry while defending the truth.

'My friend,' he concluded triumphantly, 'you don't know what it is to be in the Line of Fire'.

The man sat back in his chair, his eyes closed as if in realization.

When he spoke after sometime, it was with a calm certainty that surprised Vivek.

'I know sir,..... I know what it is to be in the Line of Fire......'

He was staring blankly, as if no passenger, no train existed, just a vast expanse of time.

'There were 30 of us when we were ordered to capture Point 4875 in the cover of the night.

The enemy was firing from the top.

There was no knowing where the next bullet was going to come from and for whom.

In the morning when we finally hoisted the tri-colour at the top only

4 of us were alive.'

'You are a...?'

'I am Subedar Sushant from the 13 J&K Rifles on duty at Peak 4875 in Kargil. They tell me I have completed my term and can opt for a soft assignment.

But, tell me sir, can one give up duty just because it makes life easier?

On the dawn of that capture, one of my colleagues lay injured in the snow, open to enemy fire while we were hiding behind a bunker.

It was my job to go and fetch that soldier to safety. But my captain Sahib refused me permission and went ahead himself.

He said that the first pledge he had taken as a Gentleman Cadet was to put the safety and welfare of the nation foremost followed by the safety and welfare of the men he commanded... ....his own personal safety came last, always and every time.'

'He was killed as he shielded and brought that injured soldier into the bunker.. Every morning thereafter, as we stood guard, I could see him taking all those bullets, which were actually meant for me . I know sir....I know, what it is to be in the Line of Fire.'

Vivek looked at him in disbelief not sure of how to respond. Abruptly, he switched off the laptop.

It seemed trivial, even insulting to edit a Word document in the presence of a man for whom valour and duty was a daily part of life; valour and sense of duty which he had so far attributed only to epical heroes.

The train slowed down as it pulled into the station, and Subedar Sushant picked up his bags to alight.

'It was nice meeting you sir.'

Vivek fumbled with the handshake.

This hand... had climbed mountains, pressed the trigger, and hoisted the tri-colour. Suddenly, as if by impulse, he stood up at attention and his right hand went up in an impromptu salute....

It was the least he felt he could do for the country.

PS: The incident he narrated during the capture of Peak 4875 is a true-life incident during the Kargil war. Capt. Batra sacrificed his life while trying to save one of the men he commanded, as victory was within sight. For this and various other acts of bravery, he was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, the nation's highest military award.

Civil Liabilities for Nuclear Damage Bill

Our government is churning out one hazardous bill after another. This time it is a bill called the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, and it's coming up for a vote in a couple of days.

The bill lets U.S. corporations off the hook for any nuclear accidents they cause on Indian soil. They'd only have to pay a meager amount, and Indian taxpayers would be stuck paying crores for the nuclear clean up and to compensate the victims.

Without any public debate, the Prime Minister is appeasing American interests and ignoring our safety.

Greenpeace is launching a petition asking the PM to hold a public consultation before introducing the bill.

Women: No not Mexican, the last time i got pimples on my face

Men: Alright, why don't we have Szechwan cuisine

He said, "Your husband is suffering from a very severe disease, combined with horrible stress. If you don´t do the following, your husband will surely die. Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant, and make sure he is in a good mood. For lunch make him a nutritious meal he can take to work. And for dinner, prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don´t burden him with chores, as this could further his stress.
Don´t discuss your problems with him; it will only make his stress worse. Try to relax your husband in the evening by wearing lingerie and giving him plenty of back-rubs. Encourage him to watch some type of team sporting event on television. And most importantly, make love with your husband several times a week and satisfy his every whim. If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think your husband
will regain his health.

On the way home, the husband asked his wife, "What did the doctor say?"

"You´re going to die," she replied. :)

Impact of Recession Undeniable Truths

The recession of 2008-2009 will last in the minds of many individuals for the rest of their lives. We have seen companies suffer unprecedented losses, countries brought to their knees and individuals losing their entire fortunes in a matter of hours. To compound the issue is that in the aftermath of all these losses, is the revelation that all this could have been avoided with better fiscal planning, investors being more pragmatic and less dishonesty on the path of investment traders. Irrespective of who is to be blamed, the overwhelming fact is that this recession has been one of the worst and its effects will usher in various changes that should prevent it from reoccurring.

Changes because of the Recession

The recession has led to many individuals and government to rethink their economic strategies to drag themselves out and prevent falling back into recession. Some of these changes include:

1. Currency Changes: The days of the rule of the US dollar are over. Since the advent of the latest recession, we have witnessed the value of the US dollar falling against other major world currencies. In addition, many investors are shifting their investments from US dollars to gold as they now see gold as a more secure format of hording their money. This has also triggered a rise in the price of gold thus reaping huge profits for early bird investors.

2. Consumer changes: The world of China manufactures and the US consumes is now confined to the history books. The credit downfall in the US and subsequently in other major commercial markets resulted in US consumers tightening their belts and literally brought the consumer driven market to a standstill. As a result, manufacturing countries such as China have to turn to their own population by implemental fiscal policies that promote local spending. Thanks to their large population, China’s economy with still growing while other countries broke under the burden of the recession.

3. Fiscal Policy Changes: The recession have ushered a wave of fiscal changes. To counter the effects of the recession each country has had to formulate their own strategy based on their financial capacity. In the US, It has seen extensive government spending to boost employment, the implementation stringent rules on bonus packages for top executives of financial institutions and the lowering of interest rates to boost borrowing.
Japan is battling a problem of deflation where prices keep dropping due a rise in the value of the yen against the US dollar. As a result, they are implementing policies that will add some controlled inflation to their financial system.

Other countries such as Iceland have had to resort to borrowing from the IMF to sure up their finances as all their national reserves dried up because of the recession.

4. Political Landscape: Prior to the recession, the world was in a one-poled mode where all events were dictated by the United States. However, the crippling recession has brought the US to its knees to an extent where they have had to resort to getting financial assistance from countries such as China. This has significantly rescinded their political clout as they are now unable to pressure these countries to conform to their wishes as before.

New LED tattoos from the University of Pennsylvania could make the Illustrated Man real (minus the creepy stories, of course). Researchers there are developing silicon-and-silk implantable devices which sit under the skin like a tattoo. Already implanted into mice, these tattoos could carry LEDs, turning your skin into a screen

The silk substrate onto which the chips are mounted eventually dissolves away inside the body, leaving just the electronics behind. The silicon chips are around the length of a small grain of rice — about 1 millimeter, and just 250 nanometers thick. The sheet of silk will keep them in place, molding to the shape of the skin when saline solution is added.

These displays could be hooked up to any kind of electronic device, also inside the body. Medical uses are being explored, from blood-sugar sensors that show their readouts on the skin itself to neurodevices that tie into the body’s nervous system — hooking chips to particular nerves to control a prosthetic hand, for example.

Chips are already used inside bodies, most notably the tiny RFID tags injected into pets. But the flexible nature of these “tattooed” circuits means they can move elastically with the body, sitting in places.

Mercedes Benz India is on its toes to provide Indian roads with W212, company's new E-Class super luxury car, by the end of the running month.

The German luxury car-manufacturer had unveiled the E-class model at the Detroit Auto Show 2009.

The new E-Class was made available in Europe in March and in America in July. New E-Class super luxury car will be assembled at company's Pune plant in Maharashtra. However,Mercedes Benz India will roll out only one variant with 3.5L 24 Valve V6 petrol engine.

The upcoming luxury vehicle will have speed limit spotting ability, Night View Assist Plus, Proximity Control System in addition to adaptive high-beam assist.Mercedes Benz India has not disclosed the prices of new E-class. Company's existing E-class models are available with a price tag of Rs 38-43 lakh.This one will be some where between 50-55 lakh.

Entrepreneurship With Frienship - Bad Idea !!

There is a risk in going into business with friends -- if the business relationship sours, the friendship almost certainly will end.
But what if you find yourself becoming friends with employees you hire in your business?
I have observed that young entrepreneurs becoming buddies with their employees and wasn't so sure that was a good practice.
In a small business, becoming friends with employees is a natural occurrence. A small group of people working closely toward common goals often develops friendships with each other. You all suffer together through the trials and travails of start-up and early growth, which can create strong bonds.
We know that facing common adversity is powerful for building teams. Such camaraderie can be a critical element in building a strong culture in the business and in creating loyalty among your staff.
But, it is important for the entrepreneur to keep certain boundaries as such friendships develop.
No matter how strong the team becomes, the entrepreneur is the one person who is ultimately responsible for the outcomes of the business -- the one who personally has everything on the line.
Hard decisions will have to be made at crucial points in the growth of the business. And no matter how hard it may be, the entrepreneur must make the best decision for the future of the business even if it may not be in the best personal interest of all the individual employees.
Be the 'shock absorber'
As the business owner, there are certain things you should never share with your employees.
If they have become your friends, you may feel that you can share your deepest fears about the business with them. This is a mistake.
First and foremost you are their leader. It is your job to communicate confidence and commitment to the vision, even when times are tough.
You need to be what I call their "emotional shock absorber." Your confidence and commitment will be what keeps them on task and doing what needs to get done to survive rocky times.
If you share your fears and doubts, as you might with a good friend, you run a real risk of creating a climate of hopelessness and defeat in your company.
At the end of our discussion my advice to the student entrepreneur was that it was OK to become friendly with employees, but to maintain certain limits. It is fine to socialize, but remember that you are the owner and the boss 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
It is not unlike the parent/child relationship as the child moves into early adulthood. While parent and child find their relationship can evolve more and more into one of friendship, there remains a certain boundary based on their familial relationship.
Friendships with your employees need to also have these boundaries.

" Revenue Canada decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the Revenue Canada office.

The auditor was not surprised when Grandpa showed up with his attorney.

The auditor said, 'Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, Which you explain by saying that you win money gambling. I'm not sure Revenue Canada finds that believable.'

The stunned auditor now realizes he has wagered and lost three grand, with Grandpa's attorney as a witness. He starts to get nervous.

'Want to go double or nothing?' Grandpa asks 'I'll bet you six thousand dollars that I can stand on one side of your desk, and pee into that wastebasket on the other side, and never get a drop anywhere in between.'

The auditor, twice burned, is cautious now, but he looks carefully and decides there's no way this old guy could possibly manage that stunt, so he agrees again.

Grandpa stands beside the desk and unzips his pants, but although he strains mightily, he can't make the stream reach the wastebasket on the other side, so he pretty much urinates all over the auditor's desk.

The auditor leaps with joy, realizing that he has just turned a major loss into a huge win.

But Grandpa's own attorney moans and puts his head in his hands.

'Are you okay?' the auditor asks.

'Not really,' says the attorney. 'This morning, when Grandpa told me he'd been summoned for an audit, he bet me twenty-five thousand dollars that he could come in here and piss all over your desk and that you'd be happy about it!'

After thinking for a while I’ve come to know that unknowingly or unintentionally we all are the part of rat race, with one common motive of winning the race and I am surprised to see that this thing starts right from the age of 7 or 8, when our parents says, look, the other girl/boy is better than you(in studies, sports, dance etc… ) you try hard to prove, to be in competition…

We grow up wondering whether ever we’ll be there at the top someday ?In college somebody else takes your trophy in a typical filmy way and you just end up playing the sidie(dancing behind the hero/heroins)… …

When you enter into professional life (with whatever amount of courage left inside) your colleagues and most importantly the BOSS waits for you( like a hungry lion waits for a poor goat) with the butcher’s knife(though invisible)in hand…

Finally one fine day you come to know that there’s a word called blogging where you can be just yourself and lo, here too you are worried for the comments, just don’t wanna be out of the competition…right?

What’s the solution??now please don’t say that you care a damn about this competition, because I know that all of us secretly dream of winning this race…don’t we??

Today I had the final round of Tech-Debate, Conducted by Members of Association of Computer Engineers (ACE), I teamed Up With Animesh, who out performed, beating all the Odds, which I Initially had :P

The Topic we chose for the prelims was " CYBERCRIME : THE COMPUTER SECURITY IS NOT ADEQUATE " , I spoke for the Topic (Being Cybernazi !!) and Animesh was against it, He had a real tough time facing the jury and audience during the Rebuttal Round, but he was adamant and stubborn enough to keep up his point !!, and I too kind of Backed him up, and we made it to Finals which was held today, some Six Teams were selected. And this time the topic was " RECESSION: THE BEST TIME TO START AN EXPLOSIVE INDUSTRY " and we were supposed to Speak “ FOR” it , Although I don't read lot of Newspapers and also, Not a Economic Buff so I had a Hard Time Initially Thanks to Animesh and Abhilash, who although being the Underdogs of their Elective: Business Studies, did come up with many beautiful points and which I was explained in a matter of some 30 Minutes, in the Backdrop of One of the Most Strict Staff of Our CSE Department, I was really at some point amazed at their deep Understanding of many Delicate Concepts which I was Completely Alien to, also I discovered Economics is Really a Interesting Subject If dealt with Proper Mentor.

Anyway it went well, with lot of Glitches, Loops and Oops, But thanks to our Opponents who were really smart at some Point which made the Event a Memorable One!!

Special Thanks to Komal who was there to Cheer us all the time, and At times the Only One in the whole Damn Hall to Clap for Us ;-)

Lets See What the Judges Felt , which will be known only by Tomorrow!

I've had a lot to blog about recently, but wasn't able to due to sheer laziness and hesitance, but as time is finally running out, I've realized I have to push things now and get a few things out of my system to clear my head. Blogging is one such medium which clears your head well, as far as I have felt, other than being a great tool to communicate your ideas, make a lot of friends, advance your career, creating your online brand, helping you not forget things that you've done, and being your resume, etc.. Do Investments Really Hurt !!

Everybody is talking about falling investments in the Indian economy because of the gloomy indian outlook based on falling markets and ever increasing inflation. Although, this does not project the real story.

If we look at the recent history of fresh investments in the country, which really matters at the end of the day rather den FII's. It was Rs 66,895 crore in 2005-06, accelerated to Rs 1.10 lakh crore in 2006-07, and further to Rs 1.44 lakh crore in 2007-08. Now with these figures, if we compare them with the most recent numbers as shown by CMIE (Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy) The fresh investments stand at Rs 1.96 lakh crore in July.

Does tat mean investors have no effect of all the negative news in the market?
What i think is that all these fresh investments were the result of huge Indian consumer demand, which as of now has taken a bit of hit. But with corporates confidence still in tact, CMIE is expecting an increase in the investments in the coming months. So lets see how long this trend will continue.......

Software patents in India occupy a contentious and indeterminate legal
space. While recent amendments to the Patent Act have sought to bring
our law in conformity with WTO-mandated standards, these amendments have
shied from pronouncing conclusively on the patentability of software.
The result is an equivocation in the law which is being wrestled
aggressively and effectively by corporate interests, patent attorneys
and the Patent Office in favor of granting software patents. Unheard,
and so unrepresented in this powerful triad are the interests of
millions of citizen-consumers who are either presumed too ignorant to be
credited with a view on the issue, or are presumed to be irrelevant to
the determination of issues which are seen as purely "business" matters
(as opposed to "citizen" matters).

Software is everywhere you look (and many places you never think
of looking). With the explosion of low-cost computing devices (think
mobile phones and iPods), software has leaked out of its traditional
home—the PC—and begun infiltrating various aspects of our lives. From
traffic signals to toilet commodes in some countries, refrigerators to
railway tickets, vacuum cleaners and electronic voting machines, TVs,
refrigerators and electronic pacemakers, inanimate objects of all sizes
are humming to themselves, chattering amongst themselves in an
intricate, highly complex tongue called 'software' that few of us can
ever hope to understand. On the impulses of software, we stop or move on
streets, fill up on petrol, and elect governments. Someone's heart
beats. Someone else receives land records on a village kiosk. Someone is
standing by helplessly for fourteen years (the un-evergreened term of a
patent) because software failed to factor in her disability.

There are big stakes involved in the control of software in an era
when software is becoming increasingly central to the way we humans
organize our lives and inhabit a democracy. At one level this is about
preserving the right of agency and self-direction that citizens have in
their own lives. At another, it is about the right not to be silenced
when our long-fought democratic republic is at risk of being diminished
by a few lines of software in a machine. Whether or not we are all in
fact capable of deciphering software is inessential. Those of us who are
ought not to be denied the freedom to interrogate, tinker and improve.

Patents have the effect of adding an additional layer of 'protection'
to already existing copyright protection of software, while
simultaneously overriding the various affordability and safeguards built
into copyright law. For instance, the right of "fair dealing" under
copyright law permits users to examine and modify any software in order
to make it interoperable with other software. This is an extremely
potent right that reasserts our right to intervene in the shaping of our
surroundings. It is also one of the rights that is most imperiled by
software patents.

The present "public hearing" on software patents is an invitation
for dialogue on the various issue surrounding software patents.
Although the Patent Office had scheduled a public consultation on its
Draft Patent Manual to be held in Bangalore in August this year, that
meeting was abruptly canceled (or postponed indefinitely, or to an
unannounced date—we can't be sure) without any reasons having been
assigned by the Patent Office. This signals either of two unpleasant
scenarios: first, the Patent Office is proceeding with its consultations
in an extremely mechanical fashion, not intending inputs received in the
course of these consultations to qualitatively impact their functioning
in any way; or secondly, perhaps the Patent Office underestimates the
amount that citizens living in the IT capital of India might have to say
on the subject of software patents.

It is our attempt in this public hearing to organize the kind of
consultation that the Indian Patent Office ought to have conducted. We
hope also hereby, to serve as a gentle but firm reminder to the Patent
Office that its task is as yet undone.

People at SASTRA.. this Day Holds a lot of Stuff in it..Not only from Open Source or GLOSS standpoint..but From a Human Standpoint..it Signifies lot of things ranging from Revolutionizing the Lives of People in all aspect and Dimensions where Computer and Software has its Reach..This Day is a Tribute To those Countless Geeks and Developers who have given their Lifetime..working day and night for Making Things easier so that People in other part of world may Live a Comfortable and Lavish life..

Whenever we use a Software be it Open sourced, Proprietary or Cracked or watever..How many times do we have Thankful Attitude??..But Believe me.. GLOSS Inaugural Function Tor The FIRST YEAR

After Three Weeks of Extensive Planning and Countless Late night Strategic Meetings we came up with many on and off the League marketing strategies for the inaugural function for the freshers which involved making up 3 highly attractive and cool full size Posters, announcement in VDV by GLOSS members, Special Announcement and Notices in the Girls Hostel, making the introductory video of GLOSS, A highly Professional and Cool looking Website for Registration which was hosted on Sanjeev's Lappy Accessible through Wi-Fi, arrangement of PriZes and last but not the least, Tackling Departmental issues like Permission for the Tifac Seminar Hall etc. Although as per Planned Most of the things went fine except for the few minor issues
like, we were expecting little more Crowd, also 15% of the total junta came Late (although this is something which is Present innately in the genes of most of the SASTRA STUDENTS, so that's why we were not much of surprised!!) also our event Overshot by 1 hour 15 minutes(this was also not as such very surprising, especially when Abhishek is speaking ) but One good thing was Abhishek sir was more down to earth more Humane today which is something i am personally happy about, so no regrets of the Overshot Event.
Going by the event statistics most of the juniors were from either from ITC Group (CSE(42), IT(5), ICT(21) ) or from Bio M:F sex Ratio was 55:45 which was unlike usual GLOSS Crowd, but also one Disappointing thing was that the most of the people who turned up had lesser IQ than what an average First Year Guy/Gal in SASTRA Has ( Although i am not so sure about the latter!) especially some jackasses were real time annoying Frogs and were getting on nerves big tym!! except that everything went well as per planned also few chicks were smart enough and asked some meaningful questions, the best part was that all the Gloss Member were introduced with an huge applause which was worth the efforts we made for the event, also i got a minute to speak with them which i think was something Cool !!

Future Content Of DEFAULT VIEW

After Considering various feed backs and Going by the Blog Hits, I have seriously Decided to keep the posts of this blog to more of my weird day to day life activities and Express my own DEFAULT VIEW on a particular thing rather than any preaching any tech advice to tweak windows or something, it was seen that, in my past posts, the content of the default view had shifted far too technical, its seems many people didn't like the idea much, so thanx to their valuable suggestions, that Default View now serves only Pure Default View.

And as far as Technical Content is concerned i am soon going to have a Tech Blog also, I'll Post the Link here.

"CHANGE TEXT ON XP START BUTTON"

'CHANGE TEXT ON XP START BUTTON'

There has been a disclaimer box on the original 'Change Text on XP Start Button' page for a number of years now warning that some functions of the Start button might be broken if the procedure was followed. Four or five years ago I published this quick little tutorial on changing the text on the XP Start button. I didn't really give it much thought at the time and it seemed to work well enough without causing any problems. I don't remember if XP was still a Gold release then or if XP1 had been released, but somewhere along the line it was pointed out that this tweak killed the search function from the Start button context menu along with a few other problems. I've meant to go back and change the procedure for ages to eliminate the problems, but you know the deal and how things get pushed aside. At any rate, I've finally taken care of making the changes.

The changes that have been made are really very minor, but they are important and do resolve the issues that have been reported. That said, you are still making changes to the registry and no matter how careful you are, there is the potential to screw up the system to the point where it becomes unusable and you may suffer data loss or have to reinstall the operating system. Make sure you have tested backups for all data as well as the skills and necessary media to restore or reinstall the operating system and all programs, if necessary. You've been warned.

I’ve read a number of articles on the internet about changing the text on the Start button in XP. On more than one occasion I’ve seen references to a five (5) letter limitation when the button is renamed. I always wondered if this was true or just an assumption someone made because the default ‘start’ just happened to fit the button size. So, I decided to run a test and see if there really was a five character limit.

As you can see from the screen capture above it would seem that the five character limit isn’t etched in stone. The button expanded to accept the text I entered with no problem. I’ve been using the system for a few weeks now with no adverse effects. That’s not to say I won’t discover something down the road a bit, but for now I feel comfortable with the changes. If you’d like to try the procedure I used, the instructions follow.

Step 1 – Modify Explorer.exe File

In order to make the changes, the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows needs to be edited. Since explorer.exe is a binary file it requires a special editor. For purposes of this article I have used Resource Hacker. Resource Hacker^TM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP operating systems. Navigate through download.com to download Resource Hacker.

The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe as shown in Fig. 01.

The category we are going to be using is String Table. Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable as shown in Fig. 02. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry. In my case I used ElderGeek as shown in Fig. 03.

Compare the screen captures in Fig. 02 and Fig. 03 and you’ll notice that after the new text string has been entered the Compile Script button that was grayed out in Fig. 02 is now active in Fig. 03. I won’t get into what’s involved in compiling a script, but suffice it to say it’s going to make this exercise worthwhile. Click Compile Script and then save the altered file using the Save As command on the File Menu. See Fig. 04

Do not use the [Save] command – Use the [Save As] command.
Name the file explorer.exe
Save the explorer.exe file to C:\Windows\inf directory.

Note: There are two things that are very important at this stage of the process. First, it's important the modified file must be named explorer.exe as this is what allows the Start button context menu search function to operate properly. Second, it's important that explorer.exe be saved somewhere in C:\Windows 'other' than in C:\Windows itself. In this example, I used C:\Windows\inf, but it could be in another C:\Windows directory as long as it doesn't already contain an explorer.exe file.

Step 2 – Modify the Registry

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to [Start] (soon to be something else) [Run] and type 'regedit' in the Open: field. Click [OK] to open the registry and navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

In the right pane (Fig. 05), double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box as shown in Fig. 06. In Value data: line, enter the directory name and file name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file, separating the directory and filename with a forward slash. Click OK.

You can refresh the registry after you have made the entry to make sure it is correct. As you can see in Fig. 07 below, Shell is now pointing to inf/explorer. exe rather than the original explorer.exe file which is still located untouched in C:\Windows.

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text. Just so you know, Fig. 08 was taken from XP Pro w/RC1 of SP3 running in a VMware virtual machine.

How to Put an Entire Drive into a Folder in XP...

This feature, called "Volume Mount Points" (also supported in Windows 2000) allows you to associate an entire partition with a single folder on your hard disk. I recommend using the Volume Mount Points feature to free up disk space on a C: drive that's getting too full. If your C: drive is getting too full, you'll find this very helpful.
Create an empty folder on your C: drive called "NewDrive".
Install your new hard disk and open the Disk Management console. You can access Disk Management from the Run command. Type diskmgmt.msc in the Run command and click OK.
In the Disk Management console, right click on the new disk and click New Volume. Click Next when the Welcome to the New Volume Wizard dialog box appears.
On the Select Volume Type page, select the Simple option. Click Next.
On the Select Disks page, make sure the correct disk (the new one) is selected and then type in the size of the partition you want to create. The default is to use the entire disk. Type in the size in the Select the amount of space in MB text box and click Next.
On the Assign Drive Letter or Path page, select the Mount in the following empty NTFS folder option and then type in the path to the NewDrive folder. Click Next.
On the Format Volume page, accept the default settings and click Next. Click Finish and the volume will be created and formatted.
Find some folders that are taking up a lot of space. Right click on those folders and click the Cut command. Then click on the NewDrive folder and use the Paste command. Note that you shouldn't do this with Program Folders and System Folders, as there are many files in use in those folders so you won't be able to reliably copy them to the new location. The Cut and Paste operation moves the files from their old folders into the new one.
Notice that all the files still appear to be on the C: drive. This makes it easy for you to save all your stuff to the C: drive, but actually use the space on the new disk.

Ubuntu Linux 8.04 ( hardy heron ) makes it very easy for Linux newbies to gets hands on Linux without those nightmares of formatting and hardware troubleshooting. Installing Ubuntu 8.04 is actually easier than Windows, it took me only about 30 minutes to get it installed and running.

Wubi, a free open source tool, enables users to download and install Ubuntu in one hit, directly from Windows. No more burning a downloaded ISO image to CD. No more booting from the CD to install Ubuntu. No more disk partitioning decisions. No more Grub boot manager.

It comes pre-installed with compiz fusion and Nvidia Graphics driver can easily be installed by typing " sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new " in terminal.

Chimera OF AN ACADEMIC LIFE

After Spending more Than 15 valuable years of my Life in Schooling, College and other Academics Related stuff, in more that 7 schools and Colleges, over India..i still can't understand the Chimera or the Illusion of an Academic life..i mean what do they really want from us..A scoring machine or a Productive skilled citizen, I am pointing this Blog towards the Rising Expectations of the Academicians..it does'nt mean that, i am scared of their rising expectations in anyway..but i have one question poping up in my mind ever since i was in class 6th..that.."is that all worth it ??".. leave Schooling apart, because that is more or less same everywhere..but atleast Academic Hubs like Universities and Colleges should hold some Standards..the old conviction of mine got stronger and firmer when i got into College..i thought pursuing a Technical course would help me Experiencing, a Cut-Throat Academic Standards, but all in-vein, it became more or less like a School.. after a Semester or so..making my words clear, i would like to add a reference of a Recent incident of Mine, last week in my C++ Programming Lab, my VIVA lasted for more than 50 minutes, whereas u might be Wondering, that in university like that of SASTRA, Viva-Voce does'nt last more than 5 minutes..even in my viva, in which Subject part lasted nearly for 4 minutes, the rest of it, was Cold Debate with my External Examinar..She is one of the Senior most Professors of my Department, her point was," every one should try for 10 point CGPA..."..to that i was trying to tell her that, there is no point in Producing TEN Pointers if their QUALITY or the SKILL Level is ZERO..I also told her that there is NO USE PRODUCING "ACADEMIC AUTOMATONS"..who know Nothing out of their Books..it won't Help them in Getting into GOOGLE or MICROSOFT...anyway, from my college even if someone, Score 10 Pointers in a row, all over 8 semester,Even then they would be landing in TCS, WIPRO,INFOSYS or anyother similar crap..like other 800 students..with cgpa's starting from 6 or so..i mean the whole point is..what did they get in the end..a 3.2 pakage..isn't it infair?..
That is why, not to be unfair at the end..i was trying to convey the staff, that the extra activities that we do, in the course of our Academic Life may cost some points but they help us learning many SKILLS and REAL LIFE Lessons Which they don't teach otherwise,and that way there are more chances of you Landing with something better (also if,in worse case,things dont turn out the way you thought, even then u'll have the threshold stuff[tcs, wipro]with you..so u c ther is nothing to lose only GAIN-GAIN)..but That evening when i told all this to sirji..he gave me big a lecture (lecture no. 2)..But anyway i was convinced,after that,i slightly modified my caption,that "IF THE SOMETHING BETTER STUFF COMES ALONG WITH 10 POINTS, IT WOULD BECOME EVEN BETTER.."..[ NO-OFFENSE :) ]

I think..(Although very rarely!!).. Everyone in this World (read it as WWW) has his (or in Some Cases Her..) View on Something or the other..it may be Right,Wrong, Legal, Illegal, feasible or impossible whatever..in the views of others...that may entirely depend upon the Perception and Thinking of the Other Person..although i may sound Philosophical and hence Boring..but if said in short...EVERY HUMAN BEING HAS HIS/HER VIEW...IT IS SET BY DEFAULT (BACK 2 THE TYM WHEN U WERE INSTALLED IN THIS VIRTUAL WORLD!!)..SO, this is My Platform to Share n Display my DEFAULT VIEW..hope u r still awake..

WARNING: Eventualy when u'll go through DEFAULT VIEW u'll figure out that many of the terms used here by default are somewhere related to COMPUTERS (which i have fascination of) so frankly speaking, Guys i can't help it much..i know at times it becomes really awful..(but u c that is your DEFAULT VIEW..)..anyway there is nothing much Geeky here..so mostly try to read it..and if some battery is still left in u...u can post your comments also..that too absolutely free(no hidden charges!!)
